The Maid of the Mist has been running tours of the American and Horseshoe falls since early 1846, making it one of North America’s oldest tourist attractions. This boat ride is by far the best way to get up close to the falls and truly experience its power. The boats have two decks, and you can choose to be inside or outside. If you are outside, chances are you will get wet, but you are provided with a raincoat upon getting on the boat. Getting soaked by the mist of the falls is one of the best parts of the ride though!
The Maid of the Mist landing is at the bottom of Clifton Hill, and in the summer the boats run from 9:45am until 7:45pm. Prices for an adult ticket at $14.50, and prices for a child’s ticket at $8.90. You can not make reservations for a spot on the boat, and you are unable to book tickets online. If you go in the summer months, there will almost certainly be a line, but it moves fairly quickly. There are also various things happening that can keep you entertained while you are waiting in line.

Journey Behind the Falls
The Journey Behind the Falls is also something that is well worth doing, especially if it is your first visit to Niagara Falls. Elevators take you 150 feet down into the bedrock of the falls, where you will then be let off to explore the many man made tunnels. Rain ponchos are also provided for this attraction, as you will likely get wet depending on how close you venture to the viewing area. There are a couple of tunnels where you can view the falls from behind, which is a very interested experience. It also allows you to hear just how loud that much water really is! There are also two observation decks, an upper and a lower.
This attraction is located at Table Rock Centre which is at 6650 Niagara Parkway. There is a large paid parking lot located across the street from Table Rock Centre; however, if you are staying at one of the many hotels right by the falls, it will be much easier and cheaper to walk down.
This You Tube video takes you on a in depth tour of the attraction Journey Behind the Falls with lots of audio commentary.
The price for this attraction is $12.00 for adults and $7.20 for children.
This is one of the attractions that is open year round, and although it may be cold, going on the journey behind the falls in the wintertime, can be a truly spectacular experience. Prices go down slightly in the winter as the lower observation deck is closed due to ice conditions.
White Water Walk
The White Water Walk takes you on an elevator which brings you down 70 metres to a tunnel, which you will walk through, and come out on a 1000 ft boardwalk that takes you along the water’s edge. The boardwalk leads to two observation areas at the edge of the river. The white water walk costs $8.50 for adults and $5.00 for children. Times vary depending on the season, but in the summer The White Water Walk in open from 9am until 8pm.
Whirlpool Aero Car
A ride on the Whirlpool Aero Car is not for someone who is afraid of heights. If heights don’t bother you though, this ride is well worth the price of admission. It doesn’t last very long, but the view you get while riding 250 feet above the waters is truly spectacular. It is quite thrilling being dangled high above the swirling and crashing whirlpool rapids! The car holds 35 people at a time, and takes about 10 minutes to complete. The ride was originally opened in 1916, although it has had several updates since then!
Prices are $11 for an adult and $6.50 for children. Hours during the summer usually run from 9am until 8pm. It should be noted that the operation of this attraction is weather dependant. If it is raining or highly windy, the ride won’t be in operation. This attraction is located at 3850 Niagara Parkway. It is approximately 4km away from the Horseshoe Falls.
This You Tube video gives a short introduction to the Whirlpool Aerocar with audio commentary.
Clifton Hill aka “The Street of Fun”
Clifton Hill is the place in Niagara Falls that gives most people the impression that it is tacky. And maybe it is. But if you know that going in, if you know that it is all meant for fun and for stimuli, and mostly for children, then you won’t be disappointed.
When you think of the falls, you think of this wonderful piece of nature, and Clifton Hill doesn’t seem to fit in properly with that. But yet, at the same time, it does fit. There is a noticeable shift when you get to the bottom of Clifton Hill and you get closer to the falls. It gets quieter, more peaceful. Clifton Hill is far enough away from the actual falls to not encroach on its beauty.
That being said, Clifton Hill is an awfully fun place to walk around. There are tons of things to do, and even if you don’t want to pay for any of the attractions, it is a great place to just people watch. Clifton Hill is filled with rides and games, lots of souvenir shops, tacky museums, fun houses, haunted houses, mazes, restaurants, you name it, it is probably there. You would probably go broke if you tried to do everything that is on Clifton Hill, and what you chose to do is just a matter of personal preference, but here are some recommendations if the whole thing just seems to overwhelming.
This You Tube video depicts 4 large attractions on Clifton Hill featuring the Niagara SkyWheel, The Great Canadian Midway, Cosmic Coaster Ride, Ghostblasters Dark ride, Movieland Wax Museum, Dinosaur Park Mini Golf and Galaxy Golf indoor mini putt.
Niagara Skywheel: it is pricey, but it does provide a spectacular view of the Falls and surrounding area, that you can’t really get anywhere else. The skywheel is 53 metres tall. The ride lasts approximately 10 minutes, and the booths are temperature controlled. The price for adults if $9.99 and the price for children is $5.99 (plus taxes). The ride is wheelchair accessible.
Bird Kingdom
Bird Kingdom at the Niagara Falls Aviary is a relatively new addition to the list of attractions in the falls. The aviary consists of 50, 000 square feet of indoor aviary with over 500 free flying birds. This is a great place to take the family and learn a little something about many different kinds of birds. There is even an area where you are able to feed the birds. The bird aviary is in a tropical atmosphere, so it would be best to wear lighter clothing to avoid getting overheated! You can learn more about the aviary by visiting www.birdkingdom.com
Niagara Fury
Niagara Fury is the newest, multi million dollar attraction in Niagara Falls. This ride takes visitors on a multi sensory ride through the creation of Niagara Falls. Snow, hail, floods, torrential rains, thunder, lightening…it all happens on Niagara Fury. Experience all of these forces of nature while being surrounded by a 3D screen which will provide you with views of the falls that most people have never seen before.
The previous is what has been said about this new ride, but if you believe all that, you’ll likely be disappointed with the actual ride. What they are charging for the ride is slightly ridiculous, given what the ride actually encompasses. This ride is appropriate from small children, but honestly, there are much better attractions out there that give you a little more value and fun for your money.
People Mover:
You can travel all day for one price on the People Mover. This eliminates the issue of driving everywhere and paying for parking. The people mover runs from Spring to Fall, and stops every 20 minutes at all the attractions. The buses are all air conditioned, so they are comfortable for driving in the summer. The driver will also provide commentary along the way, so you get a guided tour in addition to not having to stress about driving.
In the summer months, the people mover runs as late 11 pm.
The people mover runs between Table Rock Centre and the Floral Clock. The price also includes all day rides on the Falls Incline Railway which gets you from the Fallsview Tourist Area to the Table Rock Centre. Click here for People Mover prices and rates.
Fallsview Indoor Water Park
This indoor water park is inside the Falls Avenue Entertainment Complex, which is comprised of the Sheraton on the Falls hotel, The Brock Plaza Hotel, The Skyline Inn Hotel, and the Hampton Inn at the Falls.
This indoor water park is 125, 000 square feet and boasts 16 waterslides, a wave pool, splash pad, extreme racing slides and more. This complex also had many restaurants to choose from, as well as many shopping options. In terms of location, this hotel complex is much closer to the actual falls, and you will be able to walk to other attractions from this hotel. Day passes are available for this water park.
Rates also vary at this hotel throughout the year, depending on length of stay, which hotel you choose to stay at, and how many people you are traveling with. Their web site can be viewed here
