Fall/Winter Festivals:
Niagara Falls Wine Festival
Niagara is quickly becoming more and more famous for its wine region, and this two week long festival celebrates everything wine! There are hundreds of events during this festival including wine tours, concerts, wine seminars, family entertainment, the Grande Parade, and much more! This festival takes place in the last two weeks of September, and is definitely worth checking out. The best events happen on the last weekend of the festival in downtown St. Catharines, when Montebello Park in downtown St. Catharines gets taken over by thousands of wine lovers! This year the festival is happening from September 19th to September 28th, 2008. Check out their Web SIte.
Doors Open Niagara Falls
Doors Open is a great event if you are interested in history or architecture. This event opens up the doors to buildings that are not normally accessible to the public. Locations of the buildings are all throughout the Niagara Region, and there are even some on the other side of the border in Western New York. This year, the festival takes place from October 18-19, 2008. Check out their Web SIte for more details.
Winter:
Winter Festival of Lights
One of the best things about coming to Niagara Falls in the wintertime is getting to see the winter festival of lights. This year, the festival begins on November 8th, and continues until January 5th. The festival includes over 125 animated light displays, and 3 million tree and ground lights. The lights are all along the Niagara Parkway and on Dufferin Island. There is no charge, but there is a recommended donation of $10 per car. The money collected goes to the upkeep of the lights, and the addition of new displays. Fireworks happen every Friday even at 9pm while the festival is being held. Many locals have a yearly tradition of taking a drive to see the lights at Christmastime in Niagara Falls…it’s a telltale sign that if the locals do it, it’s worth a visit!
The best way to view the festival of lights is by car, and then parking at the various parks along the route to see the displays up close. More information about the Winter Festival of Lights can be found here.
In addition to seeing the Winter Festival of Lights, it is well worth your time to park somewhere and go to take a look at the falls. The sight of the falls in the wintertime is truly spectacular. Although the falls itself never freezes, the ice on the trees, lampposts, street signs, and the river itself, is often breathtaking and unique ice shapes are often formed.
However, it is important to watch your step, as the sidewalks can often get slippery in the winter with the mist from the falls freezing on absolutely everything.
Conclusion
Niagara Falls is a great place to visit for every type of person. Families, young singles, married couples, there really is something to entertain all tastes. With great restaurants, fun attractions, a vibrant atmosphere, and one heck of a view, Niagara Falls is one of those places in the world that everybody should see at least once.
It is best when travelling to a new place, to not go in with too many expectations or preconceived notions. Let the place speak for itself. Niagara Falls is much more than "the falls", but the falls are what have made the city what it is today.
The falls will inspire you, the falls will awe you with its beauty, mystify you with its endurance, and it will most definitely take your breath away.
THE END
